popular key date. Light hint of gold tone on the obverse. A

well struck near-Gem that has deep silvery mint frost from

center to periphery. A few small marks in the left obverse

field within the sun rays are noted, otherwise remarkably

clean-surfaced for a key date like 1919-D. Struck from

properly made dies, the design is very detail to bold in most

areas, barring the usual softness along the front of the

          eagle's left leg.

Since 1914 when the Great War began, much of America's

economy had been boosted by manufacturing and produc-

tion for the war effort, due in great part to inflationary

credit and currency expansion. Now, with the slackening

need for war related goods, the economy slowed in the

United States and entered a period weakness. The Volstead

Act (the prohibition of manufacture of alcoholic beverages)

was passed by Congress this year. Imports and exports of

all goods dropped. The result was that all three operational

mints were ordered to produce smaller denomination coin-

age, Cents, Nickels, Dimes, but fewer Quarters or Half Dol-

lars (no Silver Dollars or gold issues were struck in 1919).

Dollar mintage increased noticeably in 1920 at the three mints,

P, D, and S, having declined in 1919. However, after this year,

production languished with only scattered issues in 1921, 1923,

          1927, 1928, 1929 and 1933. Full-scale Half Dollar production

did not resume until 1934. Housed in an Old Style Holder.
