The “Svetlana” was built at Le Havre, France to serve as the royal yacht for Grand Duke Alexei Alexandrovich
Romanov, uncle of Nicholas II and Commander-in-Chief of the Imperial Russian Navy. The Grand Duke first used
the cruiser in early July 1898 to visit ports in the Black Sea and for naval maneuvers. With the outbreak of the
Russo-Japanese War, he offered the “Svetlana” for use as part of reinforcements being sent to the Russian Pacific Fleet.
Severely hit at the Battle of Tsushima, the ”Svetlana” attempted to evade the Japanese fleet and escape to Manila, then
to Vladivostok, but she was sunk off the Korean coast.
