NGC graded MS-64 Star
. Small Head,
Large Arrowheads. Fully reflective fields are seen on each
side, and obviously this example features a very early
strike. This die pair is known to have produced proofs this
year, and much of the die polish remained intact when this
piece was struck. Frosted devices of Liberty's head and the
eagle, along with the stars and legends further impart a
partial cameo effect. The strike is exceptionally sharp on
Liberty's curls, areas that are commonly found lacking in
depth but not at all here. The fragile surfaces are very clean
with only a few minor handling marks, but nothing singu-
larly mentionable. Light yellow-golden toning overlays the
underlying surfaces that impart a slight greenish hue. This
is a remarkably preserved example for the astute numisma-
tist who appreciates high quality.

PCGS graded MS-62
. Bright and mostly lus-
trous yellow-gold with some typical minor scuffing visible in
the fields on each side; this probably being the grade-limit-
ing factor. Areas of bold mint frost engage the protected
regions around the devices. Essentially unmarked with no
individual blemishes that require our assessment. One of
just 12,822 examples struck at Charlotte in 1840, most of
which circulated long and hard in the channels of com-
merce in and around the Southern regions. An elusive date
in Mint State, as shown by the PCGS Population figures.
