1902-O
.
PCGS graded MS-65
. Untoned with prooflike sur-
faces. One would be hard pressed to locate a more pristine '02-
O MS65 Barber dime, even if one were known to either NGC or
PCGS. The satin frosted, icy white surfaces seem like a flowing
glacier of purest ice. Even the finest, most delicate detail seen
on this coin is struck with uncommon exactness for the issue;
fortunately all the design seems to be as sharp as the lettering
and outer areas which is usual for this New Orleans date.

PCGS graded MS-65
. Frosty and white. The silvery
hue alternates between levels of frost and satin-texture. Lus-
trous and accurately graded with pleasing surfaces. A munifi-
cent strike, as well as freedom from the often-seen clash marks
for this issue, and where insufficient die pressure occurs all too
often on Liberty’s hair above her brow. That is why this is a Mint
State 65 Gem to jump at before it's sale is history.

PCGS graded Proof 67
. Only 551 struck. Fully white
gem. Beautiful and light frosty cameo for the issue, as seen
here, the ice-white mirror-deep surface is clearly superb with
almost no hairlines. In fairness to objectivity, the luster isn't the
be-all and end-all of the grade, although it is consequential to
defining a coin’s aesthetic and numismatic value. Consider
strike: a sharp impression was left by the recoil of the dies that
struck this handsome late-issue Barber Dime Proof. Crisp detail
on all devices. A remarkable coin.

1916-D. NGC graded AU Details, Improperly Cleaned
.
Nicely toned popular key date. Although it was intended to have
the new Mercury Dime, Standing Liberty Quarter and Walking
Liberty Half Dollar designs ready early in 1916, normal (and
unexpected) problems arose coining these innovative pieces.
Their designs parted ways from the prior Barber coinage and
caused the mint staff trouble. An emergency issue of 1916 Bar-
ber Dimes (and Quarters) filled the shortage of small denomina-
tions that had developed early in the year. By the time the new
Mercury dies were ready late that summer, Denver produced
only a modicum 264,000 Dimes, creating in the process today's
Key Date 1916-D. Philadelphia and San Francisco produced a
much larger number of Dimes.
Estimated Value ..............................................$4,500 - 5,000

. Lovely
light blue toning on both sides. Stunning, simply stunning.
Delicate toning highlights the pure satin frost on either side
and boldly struck throughout. Examination with a 10X glass
finds only the tiniest of ticks, and precious few of those. We
can't imagine anyone finding fault with this spectacular
coin, other than the well deserved strong price that it will
bring! The Finest PCGS Certified example in the non-Full
Bands classification. A classic rarity in gem condition that
will always be the highlight of an advanced Mercury dime
collection, just as its been a highlight in our consignor’s
holdings before he allowed us to sell it for him.
