PCGS graded Proof 62 Cameo
. Lovely golden
toning on both sides. In all likelihood, 150-175 coins are
known today out of an original mintage of 291 Proofs. This
date is also noted for an unusual "halo effect" seen around
Liberty. One has to suppose, juding how Proof dies are
made and planchets prepared and struck, that this is a
result of porosity in the die and therefore is not a defect, as
has once or twice been claimed in the past. A showy coin
with only light hairlines.
Pop 1; 26 finer at PCGS.

PCGS graded MS-65
. Mostly untoned. Only 2,300
minted. The surfaces display the desirable mint bloom so
often lacking in lower quality coins, and the luster is com-
plete and gleaming with satiny color. Sharply impressed by
the dies, with no weakness on Liberty's curls or the wreath.
The main focus of grading, however, we must look to the
surfaces and these are what really separate this coin from
the “average” MS65 $3 gold piece, and place it at the top of
that grading selection. For this Gem BU makes the grade,
and then some! We record this as an opportunity which
should not be neglected by any serious student of this
series.

Details
. Smoothed. Only 33,506 minted. Mostly untoned with
nice details and luster. The over date is quite clear on the 1803/
2 issue with, curiously, 4 die varieties reported including two
separate obverses. These always come well struck. As the pho-
tographs display, and lot viewers will see for themselves, all hair
waves are well defined. The eagle has complete feather sharp-
ness as well, the scroll bold, the shield lines present on the chief
as well as the six stripes which, along with the blank areas
between the stripes, together define the red, white and blue
colors of the United States (the chief or horizontal lines repre-
sent the color blue, while the stripes are the red and white por-
tion as seen on the Great Seal of the United States). Heraldic
and other imagery abounds on U.S. coins and paper money. But
most have forgotten their meaning in this fast-paced, techno-
logical age. (
