. Frosty with toning on both
sides, another very choice, almost gem-quality example. The
mints discontinued making Peace dollars after 1935. Dimes,
quarters and half dollars were made in ever-growing numbers;
the $1 denomination was filled by increasing supplies of $1 Sil-
ver Certificate paper money notes. (

This desirable series was struck to replace the 300-odd
million Morgan dollars melted per the Pittman Act of 1918,
which included in the bill language to have the silver replaced.
The coins, once minted, served for the most part to back Silver
Certificates which the Treasury Dept. had put into circulation.
West of the Mississippi, silver dollars tended to remain in banks;
people preferred the more convenient paper money. Lot of 24
coins.
